I would think almost all of the code is written already (although in the PS3 version). What would be great on the PS4 would be the option to play as a 'guest' instead of an existing user, which would then do exactly what the PS3 does (clone the host).

As DrMeine said, they start at level 1 and progress from there (or if they've played on another system using the same PSN account, it will use the existing cross-save). The PS4 allows only the second option (you have to create a new user on your PS4 and I think you have to tie it to a separate PSN account). That's not great when you have someone in your house that wants to play with you using their own character. That's a really nice thing when you just want a friend to jump in and play. The PS3 doesn't support multiple accounts logged in at the same time, so local players are just clones of the host. So I started playing Helldivers on a PS3, then later got a PS4.
